One Epic Knight: A fun, hilarious endless runner
When was the last time you played a free mobile game that was genuinely fun, made you laugh out loud, and was endlessly enjoyable without spending a single cent? One Epic Knight is a free endless runner from Simutronics featuring a wise-cracking knight venturing forth into a dungeon to collect loot, fight monsters, and avoid traps before inevitably dying hilariously. If you own an iOS or Android device, there's really no reason not to check it out!
The game is simple: the knight runs as far as he can into the dungeon, picking up gold coins (and, later, gems) along the path and watching out for monsters and traps. He finds swords and shields scattered around that will let him get past monsters and traps, respectively. He can also pick up mana crystals to power a temporarily invincible burst of speed, as well as the mighty turkey leg, which allows the knight to smash through any monster or obstacle for a short period of time.
After each run, the player can spend loot to upgrade the knight's various stats like swords, shields, and loot. The player can also purchase potions to use on runs, or costumes for the knight.
The best thing about One Epic Knight is the knight. Normally a wise-cracking video game character runs the risk of coming across as smarmy, obnoxious, or just tragically unfunny, but I find the knight endearing and hilarious. On the one hand, he's somewhat haughty; on the other, he knows that he's going to die horribly and he's not surprised when the end comes, though he usually manages to get in one last joke as he expires. And he sounds a bit like the ninja in Ask a Ninja. Oh man, remember that guy? Memories.
The game does occasionally pop up ads after dungeons, but the ads are text only and can easily be dismissed. You can spend real money on coins, but since the only point of the game is to pick up coins, I never bothered. One upgrade that I would recommend considering is the one that increases the amount of gold you earn after every run, as this upgrade really pays off in the long term, and you'll want to support the game's creators!
Speaking of the game's creators, one of the artists behind the game is none other than Tracy J. Butler, the amazingly talented artist behind the webcomic Lackadaisy. It's a comic about anthropomorphic cats as gangsters and bootleggers in the 1920's. You should check it out.
If you pick up One Epic Knight, let me know what you think! It's my go-to game when I have a few minutes to kill, and I think it might become one of your favorites as well.
